I don’t think I ever wrote about Daniel Johnston here, for those of you who don’t know him:
Daniel Dale Johnston (born January 22, 1961) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and artist. Johnston was the subject of the 2006 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston. He currently lives in Waller, Texas.
Johnston has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. One critic writes that Johnston’s recordings range from “spotty to brilliant”.
Even though I don’t appreciate Johnston’s voice or musical skills as a performer, I consider him one of the best songwriters of all time. A lot of people have done covers, there’s one whole album (that I listen to all the time) done as sort of a memoir, even though he didn’t die.
Today I found out that the Legendary Tiger Man, a Portuguese one man show act just did a cover of the song featured above, one of my favourites, with Cibelle. The result is once again lovely, I’d say it’s almost impossible to ruin this song, it’s one those classics, like Blackbird by the Beatles.
